Taupō beef & lamb

“Everything we do starts with the Lake.”

Mike and Sharon Barton have had a lifelong passion to protect the pristine water of Lake Taupō to ensure it retains its status as one of the cleanest lakes in the world. As farmers, this has meant doing things differently; farming in a way that preserves the soil and the water quality for today, and for generations to come.

The people

In 2011, the Bartons founded the Taupō Beef and Lamb brand, a joint initiative between Taupō catchment farmers and the Lakes and Waterways Action Group Trust.

This group of farmers – including the Bartons, Waihora Farm, the Cooper family, the Hurakia Trust, the Tuatahi Farming Partnership, Waihi Pukawa, Bracken Brae Farm and Waitui Kuratau – has created such an impressive ecologically and environmentally sustainable farming operation that the OECD uses it as a global exemplar of regenerative farming practices around catchment revitalisation and protection.

THe Planet

From caps on stock numbers and converting a percentage of land to forestry to reduce nitrogen release, the numerous environmental farming practices they have implemented have enabled them to not only protect the iconic lake, but to produce premium, grass-fed, 100% free-range beef and lamb for Harmony.

The Accolades

Every farm in the Taupō Beef and Lamb collective is validated by Waikato Regional Council for its commitment to minimise its impact on the environment. It’s a commitment that has seen Taupō Beef and Lamb named as the Supreme winners in the Ballance Farm Environment Awards in 2014, and winning The Sustainable Business Network’s Supreme Award for ‘the business making the greatest contribution to a sustainable New Zealand’. Mike Barton has also received a QSM for services to farming and the environment.

These are farmers who produce the highest quality free-range beef and lamb for Harmony, and who share a deep responsibility to look after our beautiful Lake Taupō.

The Environmental Tick on Harmony T aupo Beef products was developed in conjunction with the Waikato Regional Council as an official certification for farmers who are compliant with the strict environmental rules to protect the water of Lake Taupo and preserve the lake for generations to come. It’s also a symbol of the hard work put in by these farmers to go above a beyond, to keep their farming operation under the local nitrogen caps .
